As a Java application, IntelliJ IDEA includes JetBrains Runtime (based on OpenJDK 11), which is used by default. It is recommended to run IntelliJ IDEA using JetBrains Runtime, which fixes various known OpenJDK and Oracle JDK bugs, and provides better performance and stability. However, in some cases you may be required to use another Java runtime or a specific version of JetBrains Runtime.

Changing the runtime may cause unexpected problems. Do not change it unless you were specifically asked to do so by JetBrains support.

• IntelliJ Platform Explorer IntelliJ Platform Explorer is a web application introduced at the end of 2020 with the Get to the Extension Point blog post. This tool was created as part of JetBrains Marketplace and can be found in the Resources header menu. This tool presents a list of all the open-source IntelliJ Platform plugins hosted on GitHub.
• JDK 1.7 from Oracle is not officially supported yet and has known problems that stop us from using it by default. Oracle JDK 1.7.040 has added support for Retina and works much better than previous versions on Mac. You are welcome to give it a try in case you have any problems with Apple JDK.
• The Kotlin plugin provides language support in IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio. 22 880 190 downloads. Adds support for the Scala language.

One more thing, if your jdk was bundled with intellij idea, it could be somewhere near the idea installation. For me it was in a folder 1 directory up from the idea folder, and the PATH variable pointed to a jre in Program Files – KGS Oct 16 '18 at 18:38.

Switch the Java runtime used to run IntelliJ IDEA

1. From the main menu, select Help | Find Action or press Ctrl+Shift+A.

2. Find and select the Choose Boot Java Runtime for the IDE action.

3. Select the desired runtime and click OK.

   If necessary, you can change the location where IntelliJ IDEA will download the selected runtime.

4. Wait for IntelliJ IDEA to restart with the new runtime.

When you open the Choose Boot Runtime for the IDE dialog for the first time, it may take a while to load the list of runtimes from the server. The list contains JetBrains Runtime builds hosted on BinTray.

To use a different Java runtime available on your computer, select Add Custom Runtime under Advanced. IntelliJ IDEA lists all the JDKs and JREs that it was able to detect. Alternatively, click Add JDK to specify the location of the desired Java home directory.

To reset back to the default runtime that the IDE initially used, click Use Default Runtime.

The path to the selected runtime is stored in the idea.jdk or idea64.jdk file in the IntelliJ IDEA configuration directory. If there are problems with the selected runtime, you can delete this file to revert to the default runtime.

You can also override the runtime used for IntelliJ IDEA by adding the IDEA_JDK environment variable with the path to the desired JDK home directory.
